Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Dulcet was designed around the EL34 power pentode. It also sounds great with high quality 6V6GT beam tetrodes, which drop the output power to 22W.

5881, KT66, KT77, and 6L6GC beam tubes are also safe to use. Do not use larger octal tubes like 6550, KT88, KT90, et cetera, or damage may occur.

  • It may seem impossible given the number of tubes, but the entire amplifier, including reverb drive and recovery, is indeed 100% tube.

Apart from the LED indication, the only solid state circuitry in the Dulcet 30 is the analog switching logic, and a simple buffer for the cabinet simulator outputs. The cabinet simulator itself is passive, using powerful tuned filters.

  • Normally, hot-switching speaker loads on a tube amp is a very bad idea, but you can rest easy with the Dulcet 30. It has reliable, redundant safety circuitry built-in.

Precision timed relays mute the power amp during the transition between channels, and the delayed "make-before-break" action of the high-current attenuator relays guarantees a safe load is always present.

  • The analog switching logic in the Dulcet 30 ensures that the tube power amp always sees the correct load, no matter the attenuator setting.

Set the Impedance Selector to match the Ω rating of your cabinet, and the Dulcet 30 does the rest.

  • No. We specifically designed the power transformer for 60 Hz mains power, standard throughout North and most of South America.

It boils down to this: if we allowed for safe 50 Hz operation, the dynamic response at 60 Hz would suffer.

We may offer a 220-240VAC 50 Hz version in the future.

  • The Crystal Codex will work with most standard (2.1mm center negative) 9V pedal power supplies capable of delivering at least 200mA.
